Zapiro, born Jonathan Shapiro, is South Africa’s most prominent editorial cartoonist. After studying architecture at the University of Cape Town and receiving a Fulbright Scholarship in New York, he became known for his sharp political commentary. He has drawn for the Daily Maverick, Mail & Guardian, Sowetan, Sunday Times, and others. As an activist in the 1980s, he contributed to the UDF and South magazine. Zapiro has published 30 best-selling annuals, his latest annual is titled, What Else Could Go Wrong? He has also published four special collections, earning numerous awards and three honorary doctorates – the latest being a doctorate in Education from the University of Pretoria in 2025.
