James Whyle grew up in the Amatole Mountains of South Africa. After being conscripted into the apartheid army, he was discharged on the grounds of insanity — an outcome he actively encouraged. His play, National Madness, won an Amstel Playwright of the Year merit award in 1982. His story, The Story, was selected by JM Coetzee as the winner of the 2011 PEN/Studzinski competition. His debut novel, The Book of War, won the M-Net Literary Prize for best debut in 2012. His latest book, We Two From Heaven, continues his exploration of history and the human condition.
