Alan Lee

Alan Lee is the Science and Innovation Programme Manager at BirdLife South Africa and a leading ornithologist specialising in bird conservation, citizen science, and Red List assessments. He has authored or co-authored around 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers and plays a central role in coordinating large-scale bird monitoring programmes across southern Africa. Alan was the lead editor of the Regional Red Data Book of Birds of South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini and co-authored Birds on the Brink, which brings the science behind extinction risk assessments to a wider audience. His work bridges rigorous science, policy relevance, and public engagement to secure a future for threatened birds.
