Mohale Mashigo

Mohale Mashigo was born and raised in Soweto and holds a BA in Journalism and Linguistics from Rhodes University. A multi-disciplinary storyteller who loves to explore the unknown (her books include Intruders, a collection of short stories in the genre of speculative fiction), she is a best-selling author and her writing has been shortlisted and longlisted for a variety of prizes. Her book The Yearning won the University of Johannesburg Prize for South African Debut Writing in English in 2016. In 2020 she received the inaugural Philida Award, which is awarded for an oeuvre of literary excellence. Mashigo also writes children’s books and comic books. The children’s book Where is Lulu? (2018) was translated into the 11 official languages of South Africa. Her comic-book work has appeared in the popular Kwezi since 2017, and she has worked on various projects with both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. She is currently Narrative Director for Nyamakop, the game development studio. In addition to being a writer, Mashigo is an award-winning singer-songwriter who performs under the name “Black Porcelain”.
