Miriam Grech-Cumbo

Miriam Grech-Cumbo, daughter of the Johannesburg gallerist Egon Guenther, has since her father’s death in 2017 committed herself to preserving his legacy and capturing the story of his remarkable life. Guenther played a groundbreaking role in changing the trajectory of South African art, which began to move away from predominantly European-influenced artmaking towards important work developing a distinctly African visual language. An accomplished creative in her own right, Grech-Cumbo wanted initially to record her father’s life for her grandchildren’s sake, but soon realised how important it was to preserve his legacy for art historical and research purposes. Her tireless work has become the basis of The Sculptures of Sydney Kumalo and Ezrom Legae: A Catalogue Raisonné.
