Julian Cobbing

Julian Cobbing studied History at King’s College, London University. In the 1970s he taught at the then University College of Rhodesia, while gaining a PhD from Lancaster University on the Ndebele at the time of Mzilikazi and Lobengula.  From 1977 he taught history at Rhodes University, where he researched and comprehensively revised the broad theme of the Mfecane.  In 1997, breaking from the preoccupations of standard ‘history-history’, Cobbing developed a popular course that overviewed the entire history of Homo sapiens, focusing on the origins of the current global crisis and its likely future. After his retirement, his ex-students persuaded him to make the course more widely available, resulting in Growth Growth Growth: Human History and the Planetary Catastrophe, published by Mvusi Books in 2023.
