Hein Willemse retired in 2022 as head of the Department of Afrikaans at the University of Pretoria. A former president of ISOLA (The International Society for the Oral Literatures of Africa), he also served as editor-in-chief of the journal Tydskrif vir Letterkunde from 2003 to 2019, focusing on African literature. Willemse actively participated in the anti-apartheid movement, attending the historic Victoria Falls Writers’ Conference in 1989 with prominent Afrikaans authors like André Brink and Breyten Breytenbach. Alongside his academic achievements, Hein co-authored The Arabic Afrikaans Writing Tradition, shedding light on an intriguing literary intersection. He’s known for his extensive publications and poetry contributions.
