Cato Pedder was born in California, into the Clarks shoe family, and was brought up in England. She graduated in English Literature from Cambridge University, and holds further degrees in African Studies (from SOAS) and Creative Writing from Kingston University, where she won the academic prize. She is a published poet who has lived in South Africa and returns there regularly, and a former newspaper reporter with 15 years’ experience in both South Africa and the UK. Pedder is also the great-grand-daughter of Jan Smuts, the South African prime minister responsible for heralding the age of apartheid, and her book Moederland: Nine Daughters of South Africa is a fascinating and unflinching work of forensic non-fiction.
