 MARLENE VAN NIEKERK

Marlene van NiekerkMARLENE VAN NIEKERK  is a poet and the author of satirical short stories and two novels, Triomf and Agaat, both of which have been translated into English. 

She grew up near Caledon in the Western Cape and studied languages and philosophy at the University of Stellenbosch where she obtained an MA. In 1979 she moved to Germany to join theatres in Stuttgart and Mainz as a directing apprentice.  From 1980–1985 she continued her studies of philosophy in Holland and obtained a PhD.

 Back in South Africa she lectured in philosophy at the University of Zululand, and later at Unisa. Afterwards she lectured in Afrikaans and Dutch at the University of Witwatersrand and is currently Professor in the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch at the University of Stellenbosch.
